Jim Ross - 1947-2016

Old Sedberghians will be saddened to hear of the death of Jim Ross on August 31, 2016.

The following appeared in the Montreal Gazette:

 "James Douglas Ross June 10, 1947 - August 31, 2016

Born in Montreal, Died at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. Predeceased by parents LT. COL. George Allen Ross DSO ED & Florence Elizabeth Weir & brothers Robert Allen Ross & George Weir Ross. Survived by his children Meredith, Chloe and Morgan (Chantal) & Grandson Hudson. Remembered fondly by family & friends, bobsledding community, Bistro on the Avenue. Memorial to be held Spring 2017 details to follow in February 2017. Facebook group "James Douglas Ross Memorial"."

Friends of Jim have offered information about Jim's life and I pass it along to you.

Jim arrived at Sedbergh in 1961 from the Town of Mount Royal and shared the hut Marten with Eric Garland and Richard Beaton. Jim spent his summers at Lac des Iles in Entrelacs in the Laurentians. His family had started the English community there in 1876.

Jim's brother, Weir, co-owned Barbarians Restaurant in Toronto for many years and Jim learned his craft as a chef under his brother's guidance there during the 1970s.

Returning to the Montreal area, Jim and a partner bought The Willow Inn in Hudson. Because he was an avid bobsledder,he went on to Lake Placid to run a restaurant there before once more returning to Canada to run Auberge du Lac Morency in the Laurentians. Finally, in about 1990, he and John Vaughn opened The Bistro on Greene Avenue in Westmount.

The Bistro was sold several years when Greene Ave was torn up by the city, and Jim retired. He spent his winters in Nicaragua and came back to Montreal for the summers.

He will be missed by his friends,and a celebration of Jim's life will be held in Lac des Iles next summer, with details to follow in February 2017.
